About this tour

During the British Colonial era, in 1842, the House of Commons in London proposed the establishment of a garden on the mountains of Aburi. However, this idea was dismissed at the time. Another attempt in 1865 to create the garden proved unsuccessful, as authorities questioned the necessity of investing significant resources in establishing a garden so far from home. Finally, in March 1890, the concept gained approval under the guidance of a German Basel Missionary and the governance of His Excellency, Sir W. Brandford-Griffith.

To initiate the gardens, a portion of land was cleared, and in the same year, Mr. William Crowther from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, was appointed as the first curator. His visionary efforts led to the transformation of the land into a renowned garden, cultivating 6.8 hectares by 1902. Employing his botanical expertise, Crowther demarcated the land into three distinct plots for the cultivation of economic plants, botanical specimens, and decorative plants.

The diligent efforts of these early pioneers have not been in vain. Today, Aburi boasts a splendid botanical garden, one of around 1800 such gardens worldwide, dedicated primarily to preserving and conserving the remaining rare plant species on Earth.
